The 1,474-square-foot residence, designed by Forma's principals Miroslava Brooks and Daniel Markiewicz, is a personal project for their country weekends. Located on a 700-square-foot plot within a nine-acre wooded property in Hillsdale, New York, the house is a striking contrast to its surroundings.
The design philosophy? A bold statement piece that blends into the landscape while minimizing its environmental footprint. As the studio eloquently puts it, "This singular artistic gesture stands off from the serene landscape, yet remains in harmony with it." And this is where the magic happens: the house engages with its picturesque setting through a series of carefully curated design elements.
Perched on a small hilltop, the house offers breathtaking views. Vertical windows frame the Catskills to the west, while pentagon-shaped windows capture the Berkshires to the east. The cedar siding, a key feature, changes angles as you move around the house. The west facade, grounded and vertical, contrasts with the east facade's diagonal boards, mirroring the house's lift on angled legs, creating a sheltered patio.
But here's where it gets controversial: the exterior cedar is predominantly blackened, creating a dramatic contrast with the landscape. However, the patio walls retain their natural, warm cedar hue, highlighting the wood's texture. This dual-toned approach adds depth and intrigue to the design.
The interior layout is equally fascinating. Each floor of the square floor plan is divided into two halves, seamlessly blending shared public spaces with private sleeping areas.
