From Karnataka to Quebec: Shreyas Movva's Cricket Odyssey

In Quebec, cricket is more than just a sport; it's a cultural identity. Movva, a 32-year-old native of Davanagere, Karnataka, had a burning desire to play for his home state's team. However, his dream didn't materialize, leading him to pursue his mother's dream instead. He moved to Canada in 2016 for his studies, where he discovered a thriving cricket community.
"For us, the summer starts in May and ends in September or October," Movva explained. "After that, it's winter. We go indoors, practice in nets, and can't create match situations." Despite these challenges, Movva's passion for cricket remained unwavering.
Overcoming Obstacles
Movva's journey to the national team wasn't easy. He had to perform exceptionally well to earn his place. The cricket grounds in Quebec, however, presented their own hurdles. They lacked the international or Associate level facilities, forcing players to adapt to matting wickets.
"Coming from Quebec was not easy," Movva admitted. "I had to work hard to get into the national team. The grounds here are not up to the required standard, and we need a turf wicket." Yet, Movva's determination prevailed.
International Recognition
At the Associate level, Movva's skills as a wicketkeeper batter and his nifty footwork have earned him recognition. He has played 24 ODIs and 26 T20Is for Canada, showcasing his talent on the global stage. In the Global T20 Canada, he faced the express pace of Australia's Spencer Johnson, proving his mettle.
T20 World Cup Challenge
In the ongoing T20 World Cup, Movva has had his chances but has yet to convert them into substantial scores. With only two more games against New Zealand and Afghanistan, he knows the pressure is on. As an Associate team, Canada faces a unique challenge.
"We get this opportunity every two years," Movva said. "It's hard for an Associate team to consistently play against the best teams." His experience and determination will be crucial in Canada's quest for success.

Movva's dedication to cricket has been a balancing act with his IT job. His employer's understanding and flexibility have allowed him to pursue his passion. During his time away from the team, his job has been a source of stability and motivation.
"My company was very supportive," Movva praised. "They allowed me to play and work nights." This balance has been instrumental in his ability to focus on cricket without sacrificing his career.

As Movva prepares for the crucial matches against New Zealand and Afghanistan, he remains focused on his goal. He's eager to test himself against top-tier opponents and prove his worth.
