A new influenza variant is causing concern, but the World Health Organization (WHO) is here to remind us that vaccination is our best defense.
Dr. Wenqing Zhang, an expert at WHO, warns of a surge in respiratory viruses, including a new AH3N2 virus subclade. This new variant, known as J.2.4.1 or subclade K, has already spread to over 30 countries since its detection in Australia and New Zealand in August.
"This genetic shift is notable, but early evidence suggests the current seasonal vaccines offer protection against severe diseases and reduce hospitalization risks," Dr. Zhang explains.
Influenza viruses are notorious shape-shifters, constantly evolving, which is why the vaccine composition is regularly updated. WHO closely monitors these changes through the Global Influenza Surveillance and Response System (GISRS), collaborating with global experts to assess risks and make vaccine recommendations.
Despite the new variant not being incorporated into the latest Northern Hemisphere vaccines, Dr. Zhang emphasizes that vaccination remains our most effective tool, especially for high-risk populations.
"The vaccine's effectiveness against this new variant is promising," she says, citing data showing around 75% effectiveness against severe disease and hospitalization in children and 35% in adults.
As we approach the holiday season, Dr. Zhang urges countries to strengthen their health systems, encourage vaccination, and enhance lab diagnostics and surveillance.
"Global monitoring is key," she adds, highlighting the importance of the GISRS network, which includes influenza centers and reference laboratories in 130 countries.
Even with the United States' decision to leave WHO, Dr. Zhang emphasizes the need for global participation in respiratory virus surveillance and preparedness.
"We don't know when or where the next pandemic strain will emerge, so having all countries involved is crucial to saving lives," she concludes.
So, while this new influenza variant is a cause for concern, the WHO's message is clear: vaccination is our best bet to stay protected and prepared.
