Mount Fuji's Sakura Festival Cancelled: A Look at the Impact of Overtourism (2026)

The annual cherry blossom festival at Arakurayama Sengen Park, a beloved spring tradition near Mount Fuji, has been canceled due to concerns over visitor behavior. This decision, made by Japanese authorities on February 3, highlights the delicate balance between preserving local culture and managing the impact of tourism. The Fujiyoshida city government cited the need to protect the lifestyles of local residents from the negative effects of excessive tourist numbers, such as traffic congestion, harassment, and hygiene issues. The festival, which attracts 200,000 visitors annually, has seen an influx of more than 10,000 visitors per day during the cherry blossom season, straining local resources and disrupting the peaceful atmosphere. The city, located in Yamanashi Prefecture near the iconic Mount Fuji, has been hosting the festival for approximately 10 years to enhance the area's appeal and increase visitor numbers. However, the weak yen and explosive popularity caused by social media have led to a dramatic increase in foreign tourists, far beyond expectations. Mayor Shigeru Horiuchi expressed a sense of crisis, stating, 'For Fujiyoshida City, Mount Fuji is not just a tourist attraction; it is our very way of life. However, I feel a strong sense of crisis about the reality that, behind the beautiful scenery, the quiet lives of our residents are being threatened.'
