A Disappointing Setback for Kron Gracie
In a surprising turn of events, Kron Gracie's highly anticipated MMA comeback has been put on hold. The UFC veteran was all set to battle it out for the featherweight title this Friday in New York, but a medical clearance hurdle has thrown a wrench in his plans.
Guilherme Cruz, a seasoned combat sports journalist, brings us the story. Gracie, a jiu-jitsu legend, was scheduled to face Tom Picciano in the main event at the Victory Fighting League. However, the New York State Athletic Commission's decision to withhold medical clearance has forced the promotion to make last-minute changes to the card.
"This is a tough pill to swallow," said VFL CEO Dan Anderson. "We understand the disappointment, but the commission's decision is final. We're working to resolve this and get Kron back in the ring as soon as possible."
But here's where it gets controversial... Gracie himself claims he's fit to fight. "I'm good to go," he wrote on social media. "My doctors have cleared me, but the NYSAC is being difficult. I'm ready, and I've invested a lot in this camp. It's a real bummer."
And this is the part most people miss: Gracie's last fight was a knockout loss to Bryce Mitchell in 2024, marking his third consecutive defeat in the UFC. Prior to that, he had an impressive 5-0 record in professional MMA.
In the wake of Gracie's withdrawal, the VFL has promoted a bantamweight showdown between ex-UFC fighter Daniel Lacerda and Ashiek Ajim to co-main event status. T.J. Brown and Dylan Mantello, originally slated for the co-main, will now headline the card.
