Incredible Orca Encounter: Swimmer Awestruck at Wellington Bay (2026)

Imagine this: You're seeking solace, a quiet moment of reflection in the tranquil waters of a Wellington bay. Suddenly, enormous shadows appear, and you find yourself face-to-face with a pod of orcas. Terrifying, right? But for one man, it was an experience he described as "pretty awestruck."

Joel Crampton, a Wellington local, had made it a habit to take nightly swims in Oriental Bay, using the time for quiet contemplation and prayer. One Friday evening, while resting on a pontoon in the bay, his peaceful routine took a dramatic turn. He was, in his words, "interrupted" by an orca – not just any orca, but one that decided to give him a watery surprise. "It spouted all over me!" Crampton exclaimed. "I was pretty awestruck in the moment. That's probably the last thing you expect to see on your evening swim."

This incredible encounter was captured on video by a lucky onlooker. The footage shows Crampton standing on the pontoon, looking down in apparent shock as the magnificent creatures circled him. Crampton later told 1News that the orcas came within a mere two meters of him. "A bit of fear set in," he admitted. "I didn't know at the time that orcas were harmless." And this is the part most people miss: while orcas are apex predators, known as "killer whales," they rarely, if ever, attack humans in the wild. There have been documented cases of orcas interacting with humans in a playful or curious manner, but attacks are virtually unheard of. But here's where it gets controversial... some researchers believe that orca behavior is becoming more unpredictable due to factors like habitat loss and stress from human activity.

After the whales swam away, Crampton made a hasty retreat to shore. But the experience, surprisingly, didn't deter him. He stated that he would likely return for another swim the following evening.

So, what would you do in that situation? Would you be terrified, awestruck, or a bit of both? And does this story change your perception of orcas? Share your thoughts in the comments below!
