Gilberto Silva Defends World Cup Expansion: Brazil's Chances? (2026)

Is the World Cup getting too big? Football icon Gilberto Silva, a key player in Brazil's 2002 World Cup victory, is weighing in on FIFA's decision to expand the tournament. He believes this move reflects the evolving nature of the sport, including the introduction of a new, similar club competition every four years.

The next World Cup, hosted jointly by the United States, Canada, and Mexico, will showcase 48 teams, a significant jump from the 32 teams that have competed in the last seven editions.

Silva, a defensive midfielder known for his commanding presence, was a crucial part of the Brazilian team that last lifted the coveted trophy. He shared his thoughts at an event in Hong Kong, organized by CSTS Enterprises and supported by Connexus Travel, the official sales agent for 2026 World Cup hospitality packages in China.

He doesn't seem overly concerned about the expanded format's initial group stage, where only 16 teams will be eliminated. The group phase will span approximately two weeks, and the entire tournament will last nearly six weeks.

Silva acknowledges that any change, particularly in a major tournament, can raise concerns. "Whenever anything changes, especially at such a major tournament, we question the potential quality of the games and the length of the competition, and fear it might not be as interesting," he noted.

But here's where it gets controversial... Will a larger tournament dilute the quality of play? What do you think? Is expansion a good thing for the sport, or does it risk losing some of the excitement and intensity that makes the World Cup so special? Share your thoughts below!
