Unveiling the Secrets of β Pictoris b: The Hunt for Binary Planets and Exomoons

The quest to uncover the mysteries of distant celestial bodies has captivated astronomers for years, and the search for exomoons—moons orbiting planets in other star systems—has emerged as a particularly intriguing endeavor. This fascination is fueled by advancements in detection technology and the growing catalog of known exoplanets.

Among the myriad of star systems, the β Pictoris system stands out as a prime candidate for exploration. Its proximity and the direct imaging of its planets offer a unique opportunity for precise astrometric monitoring, enabling scientists to delve deeper into the dynamics of planetary systems.

In this groundbreaking study, we present the first astrometric constraints on the existence of binary planets and exomoons within the β Pictoris system. Utilizing archival observations from the GRAVITY interferometer and SPHERE instruments, we meticulously modeled the motion of the two orbiting planets and introduced a novel perturbation to simulate the astrometric motion caused by an exomoon orbiting the planet β Pictoris b.

Our findings reveal intriguing insights into the potential for lunar companions. For short orbital periods of approximately 50 days, we discovered that a lunar companion can exist only if its mass remains below a threshold of approximately 180 M⊕ (0.6 MJup) at a 3σ confidence level.

As orbital periods increase to the intermediate range of around 300 days, we found that moons more massive than approximately 65 M⊕ (0.2 MJup) at a 3σ confidence level are excluded. This trend continues at longer orbital periods, where we place the most stringent constraints, ruling out any potential exomoon above approximately 50 M⊕ (0.15 MJup) at 700 days and 30 M⊕ (0.1 MJup) at 1,100 days, both at a 3σ confidence level.

These groundbreaking results not only provide the first astrometric constraints on moons and binary planets in the β Pictoris system but also highlight the remarkable sensitivity of interferometric observations in the study of exomoons. This research paves the way for further exploration and opens new avenues for understanding the complex dynamics of planetary systems in our universe.
