Jeff Bezos, the founder of Amazon, has announced through his rocket company, Blue Origin, that they plan to launch an ambitious satellite network called TeraWave. This network promises to revolutionize global internet access, offering lightning-fast data transfer speeds and continuous connectivity.
But here's where it gets controversial: despite Blue Origin's bold plans, they still lag behind Elon Musk's Starlink in terms of satellite numbers. Starlink, a part of Musk's SpaceX, currently leads the satellite internet market and offers services to individual customers, a strategy that Blue Origin seems to be avoiding for now.
TeraWave aims to focus on data centers, businesses, and governments, positioning itself as a powerful tool for data-intensive operations. Blue Origin claims their network will achieve upload and download speeds of up to 6 terabits per second, leaving rival commercial satellite services in the dust.
And this is the part most people miss: Amazon, the very company that made Bezos a billionaire, is also in the satellite game! Their venture, Leo, currently has around 180 satellites in orbit and plans to launch thousands more, targeting the general public with high-speed internet access.
Blue Origin has set a launch date for their TeraWave satellites by the end of 2027, but they've already made significant strides. In November, they successfully landed a rocket booster on a floating platform, an achievement previously only accomplished by SpaceX.
In April, Blue Origin made headlines again with an 11-minute space flight featuring an all-female crew, including Bezos' wife and some famous faces. However, this move sparked criticism, with some calling it insensitive given the economic challenges many face.
