The motorsport world was recently shaken by Aprilia's bold message to Jorge Martin during a tumultuous season marked by injury setbacks and ongoing contract disputes, all unfolding amidst the backdrop of the controversial Honda MotoGP saga. And this is the part most people miss—how a team navigates such turbulence often determines their resilience and future direction.
The story kicked off with a major move: Aprilia signing the talented MotoGP world champion Jorge Martin for their 2025 campaign. From the start, it promised to be an emotional and unpredictable journey for both the rider and the manufacturer. But inevitably, trouble arose quickly. During the initial hours of pre-season testing in Malaysia, Martin suffered an injury—a blow that foreshadowed the roller-coaster ahead.
His troubles didn't end there. More accidents ensued, with injuries worsening, including a serious crash in Qatar on his delayed RS-GP debut, where he was clipped by Fabio Di Giannantonio. The situation became even more complex when rumors surfaced that Martin was considering activating an exit clause in his contract to leave Aprilia after the season. Such news sent ripples through the paddock, heightening tensions within the team.
Martin’s manager, Albert Valera, publicly hinted at Honda as a potential new destination, fueling speculation. Aprilia’s CEO, Massimo Rivola, responded in a recent MotoGP documentary, recounting a tense exchange:
“Albert Valera approached me, saying, ‘We’re thinking about leaving, and Honda has shown strong interest with a good offer.’ I thought it was a joke. I then traveled to Madrid to speak directly with Jorge, and he told me, ‘I think it’s better for me to leave,’ to which I replied, ‘Sorry, but I won’t let you go.’”
Despite the internal resistance, Aprilia was firm. Backed publicly by Dorna’s CEO Carmelo Ezpeleta, the team held onto Martin's contract, forcing him to honor his full two-year commitment—an act of resolve in the face of external pressures.
Meanwhile, the saga of injuries persisted. Martin suffered a fourth set of fractures after misjudging his braking at the start of the Motegi Sprint, crashing into his teammate Marco Bezzecchi. In Martin’s absence, Bezzecchi—who had also come from Ducati—stepped up dramatically. He led Aprilia to their first three Grand Prix wins of the season and achieved a record-breaking third place in the rider standings—a remarkable turnaround for the Noale factory.
Aprilia’s team boss, Rivola, reflected on this turbulent season:
“It's been an emotional rollercoaster. Our initial goal was to give the riders time at the beginning of the season to fight for podium finishes. But we faced unforeseen challenges—Jorge’s injuries and the complicated Honda situation—and our plans changed dramatically.”
Balancing the fragile situation with Martin’s potential return became a delicate task. The team aimed to keep the door open while making it clear they wouldn't easily allow an early departure. Rivola shared how these trying moments ultimately strengthened their unity:
“Difficult times often push us to grow stronger as a team. Our focus was also to convince Jorge that our bike was the right choice for him, showing confidence in our machinery.”
One memorable moment was at Silverstone, where tensions around Martin’s future were high. Yet, amid the pressure, Bezzecchi delivered Aprilia’s first win of the season, aided by new technical leadership from Fabiano Sterlacchini. Rivola fondly recalled sending a voicemail to Martin after the victory, encouraging him:
“All I said was, ‘Come on! We can do this. You can do this too. Get well soon!’”
In spite of setbacks, Martin publicly reaffirmed his commitment to Aprilia for 2026 during his return at Brno, even as injuries kept him sidelined for much of the season. His absence resulted in a nearly complete missed year, and Rivola emphasized that next season would be crucial:
“Marco Bezzecchi is performing at a phenomenal level, and Jorge must prepare himself mentally to understand that it takes time to get fully comfortable with the bike. The key moment was the Misano test before his return in Brno, the only day he could work without performance pressure.”
When asked if Martin should forget 2025 and focus on starting fresh, Rivola responded thoughtfully:
“It's not easy to forget, but he will need to rebuild from scratch. Still, he can learn a lot from everything that happened this season.”
Meanwhile, Bezzecchi’s success, along with wins from Raul Fernandez and others, helped Aprilia achieve their best-ever season finish—second place behind Ducati in the constructors’ standings.
