3I/ATLAS: Alien Tech or Just a Comet? Outgassing Mystery Solved! (2026)

Unraveling the Mystery: New Study Debunks Alien Technology Theory for 3I/ATLAS

The Interstellar Visitor's True Nature Revealed

Since its arrival in our solar system, the mysterious object 3I/ATLAS has sparked curiosity and speculation. Some have even suggested it could be alien technology, pointing to its unusual trajectory and composition. But a new study offers a more down-to-earth explanation, challenging the alien-tech theory.

The research, published in the Research Notes of the AAS, reveals that 3I/ATLAS behaves like comets in our solar system. While it's easy to assume that unusual motion indicates artificial origin, the study explains that many active comets exhibit similar behavior due to a natural process called outgassing.

Outgassing occurs when gas and dust are released from the surface of a comet near the Sun, creating tiny rocket-like pushes that change its speed, orbit, and spin. This phenomenon is similar to what the study observed in 3I/ATLAS, with an acceleration of about 5 × 10⁻⁷ meters per second squared, comparable to many small comets in our solar system.

The team estimated the mass of 3I/ATLAS to be around 44 million metric tons, with a radius between 260 and 370 meters, which is entirely typical for a comet. The study's lead author, Marshall Eubanks, highlights the significance of this finding, stating that measuring non-gravitational accelerations in comets during a single flythrough of the solar system is now possible using interplanetary spacecraft.

While 3I/ATLAS is outgassing, its movements align with what we expect from a comet. The study concludes that 3I/ATLAS is indeed a comet, exotic and wonderful, offering a rare opportunity to learn about other star systems. As it reaches its closest point to Earth, astronomers continue to study its glowing coma and unusual jets, gaining valuable insights into the nature of comets and the mysteries of the universe.
